PureCM Brings Benefits of Agile ALM to Development Teams with New 2010-1 Release

15 April 2010 - PureCM, the change and configuration management specialist, has announced a major new release of its core SCM solution, PureCM 2010-1. This includes a range of new and enhanced features to support agile application lifecycle management (ALM), enabling development teams to improve their productivity, shorten release cycles, and collaborate more effectively.

Now supporting agile release planning

PureCM 2010-1's agile planning capabilities fully support working with project releases, iterations and backlogs, linking these to configuration management to ensure that any rescheduling is fully reflected. 2010-1 also automates task tracking, making parallel development easy by matching tasks to releases. This means developers automatically retrieve the right project configurations, saving time and reducing the risk of errors.

Another significant enhancement is support for isolated features. When starting work on a feature PureCM Professional automatically creates a feature stream and maps the developer workspace against it, avoiding the need for a developer to create a branch manually. In addition, PureCM Professional automatically updates features with any changes from their parent version as a default. In the event of an update conflict, the feature owner is automatically notified via his user dashboard so he can resolve the conflict using PureCM's visual resolve tool.

Furthermore, feature owners receive a notification to integrate the feature back into the parent code line as soon as developers complete a feature. PureCM Professional also enables a meaningful release history, enabling features and tasks to be seen in the project history; not individual file changes or intermediate submits. So even if a feature has been submitted against multiple times for completion, it only shows up once to allow for easy merging to other versions or even a roll back.

Improved integration with 3rd party solutions

Additional features include multiple performance and ergonomic enhancements for developers. PureCM 2010-1 fully integrates with Microsoft Visual Studio, giving developers the option to work entirely within their IDE. Features such as shelving and unshelving changes, or integrating changes from other branches are now directly available within Visual Studio, helping to boost productivity.

Further key capabilities in 2010-1 are its support for build automation and continuous integration. Together with its open SDKs, which enable custom integrations, PureCM 2010-1 allows teams to work with the toolsets they prefer.

Developers get Version Control with Optimised Visual Studio Integration with latest PureCM 2009-2 Release

12 November 2009 - PureCM, the configuration management specialist, has announced the latest version of its software configuration management (SCM) solution, PureCM 2009-2. This major release offers much tighter integration into the development environment of software development teams, boosting productivity and making collaboration easier.

Developers can now use the enhanced Visual Studio integration to easily perform task-based development within their IDE. Features originally available in PureCM only are now available directly within Visual Studio, providing developers with intuitive control of their changes and complete transparency of project progress.

Enhanced Visual Studio integration boosts developer productivity

The enhanced Visual Studio integration dramatically improves ease-of-use and productivity along the whole developer workflow. Developers can switch to project branches without rebinding solutions and group their current changes within their IDE to reflect different tasks. Collaboration is facilitated as features like shelving and unshelving changes for code review, or integrating changes from other branches are now directly available within Visual Studio.

"Prior to the launch of this enhanced Visual Studio integration, PureCM already allowed developers to perform basic source control tasks such as checkout or checkin via Microsoft's SCC API", explains Mike Shepherd, technical consultant at PureCM. "While the SCC standard is great to integrate with a wide variety of tools used in the development lifecycle, it has some serious limitations if you want to support collaboration features such as shelving. Offering an enhanced integration was the logical consequence, because of the opportunities it gives us to make life easier for developers with future releases."

Rod Weir, PRD Software said: "PureCM 9.2 gives much tighter integration with Visual Studio, which means developers can do key tasks such as managing changesets, merging changes and getting line-by-line histories to find bugs directly in Visual Studio, instead of having to swap continually between the Visual Studio and CM tool user interfaces. It saves us time and helps avoid errors."

Up to 400% performance increase

The enhanced Visual Studio integration is complemented with new plugins for Windows Explorer and Axosoft's bug tracking tool OnTime. They add to the many out-of-the-box integrations already available, including various build and modelling tools. For users interested in custom integration, the .NET and Java SDKs have been enhanced to include the latest PureCM features. This assures that users get easy access to project data from their favourite tool, regardless of their role in the development lifecycle.

While PureCM has always focused on performance to optimise support for distributed development, the latest 2009-2 release marks another substantial improvement with up to 400% faster submit performance when compared to its predecessor. PureCM makes automated parallel development accessible to all

07 April 2009 - PureCM today announced the latest version of their software configuration management solution, PureCM 2009-1. This new release allows companies of any size to benefit from automated yet fully versioned parallel development without incurring the administrative overhead or price tag of other solutions in the market.

Automated change tracking across the project hierarchy

"But the real issue for development managers is about how to keep track of what is going on in each branch and keeping related branches in sync".

PureCM 2009-1 now allows development managers to get insight into which changes need merging in real-time. Unlike other solutions that track merging only after it has been completed, PureCM can avoid human error by knowing in advance where a change, e.g. a bug fix has to go. Development managers then simply preview or confirm the merge with a mouse click, or even let the tool merge the change automatically. In case of a merge conflict, PureCM will suspend integration and allow the development manager to resolve the conflict in a visual resolve tool.

New GUI views to provide developers with full transparency

PureCM 2009-1 also introduces a completely new and simplified interface for developers. Using their cross-platform GUI, developers can see within their private workspace on which files their colleagues are currently working. Collaboration is further improved by the ability to preview their completed changes before integrating them automatically into the workspace. This solution thus combines the advantages of isolated development and transparent collaboration in a team environment.

23 October 2008 - PureCM today announced that it has launched its new Proxy Server, together with its latest PureCM 2008-3 release. The proxy server adds to PureCM's product portfolio, which already includes a fully integrated software configuration management (SCM) and issue tracking solution.

PureCM Proxy Server cuts download times dramatically

The new proxy server allows companies to scale PureCM server to distributed teams while keeping administration simple and centralised. Caching remote repository data in a local database speeds up data access enormously. Tests have shown that file downloads using the PureCM Proxy Server were more than 18 times faster than without. The number of proxy servers is not limited, so they can be used at any remote location to accelerate development.

Single view for developers

Developers can work exactly the same way with PureCM regardless of where they work, even when switching frequently between different company locations. PureCM's automatic proxy referral dynamically connects their client to the proxy server sitting within the current LAN. In case no proxy server is available, the client will automatically connect to the remote repository server.

Complementing PureCM's industry leading offline support

The proxy server complements PureCM's existing support for offline development. Developers can create local revisions in their PureCM private workspace to checkpoint their work even without server connection. Additionally, they can group their changes into changesets to simplify work on different tasks. These changesets can be integrated back into the repository the next time developers are connected to the server again.

PureCM's 2008-2 release makes a powerful but easy to use software configuration management tool a reality

The new PureCM 2008-2 release is a next step to minimise training and administration time needed to use an SCM tool. With completely redesigned Eclipse and Visual Studio plugins, working with PureCM has become easier again.

Both plugins allow developers to work in their familiar environment, where most day-to-day activities can be performed. The face lifted GUI is only needed for advanced tasks such as managing branching and merging, or implementing task automation.

Further enhancements include:

New CruiseControl.NET plugin. This plugin complements the already existing FinalBuilder integration and is particularly useful for companies implementing agile principles. Using build automation, frequent or continuous integration becomes a powerful way to realise productivity gains in the development process.
Visualising differences and merging MS Word files. Many companies use Word to document their software products. Using PureCM means tracking documentation changes without the need of manual versioning. This is easier, safer and faster than any solution without version control.
More powerful shelving. Developers can use shelving to checkpoint unfinished work on the server or to pass it to colleagues for completion.
